Which US airlines publish their cargo-hold dimensions?

Since 1 August 2025, federal law has required them to. Here is who has, what they published, and what it actually means for a wheelchair.

The rule

14 CFR 382.41(b) — Ensuring Safe Accommodations for Air Travelers With Disabilities Using Wheelchairs (89 FR 102398, published 2024-12-17, effective 2025-01-16, enforceable since 2025-08-01) requires each carrier to:

publish information in a prominent and easily accessible place on your public-facing website(s) describing the relevant dimensions and other characteristics of the cargo holds of all aircraft types you operate, including the dimensions of the cargo hold entry, that would limit the size, weight, and allowable type of cargo.

Three words carry the weight: prominent, all aircraft types, and the dimensions of the cargo hold entry. The audit below tests each carrier against those three, not against whether a figure exists somewhere on the site.

It is not a US-airline rule. § 382.41(b) opens “As a carrier, you must publish…” — not “as a U.S. carrier”. And § 382.7(b) says: “If you are a foreign carrier, this part applies to you only with respect to flights you operate that begin or end at a U.S. airport and to aircraft used for these flights.”

So every foreign airline flying to or from the United States owes the same published per-aircraft figure on those flights — and the same dispositive written response to a complaint within 30 days. This audit does not yet cover them: their accessibility pages resisted automated reading, and a figure this page cannot quote and date is a figure it will not publish. That is a gap in the audit, not a gap in the rule.

The cargo door opening

The raw aperture, with no loading clearance deducted. A chair exactly as tall as the door does not go through it — the handlers need room to manoeuvre. Useful, but it is not a device limit and must not be read as one.

Weight gates the answer here. This carrier's stated figure is a limit on the device itself, not hold floor loading, so a chair over it is refused.

A three-dimensional envelope: the maximum length allowed depends on the width and height. Correct and thorough, and it cannot be reduced to a single pair of numbers without losing the constraint.

Southwest Airlines

Publishes nothing

No per-aircraft assistive-device or cargo-door disclosure located on southwest.com. The airplane-specifications help article covers seat pitch and width only. Southwest Cargo publishes a freight Maximum Dimension Guide (max height 34 in, max width 48 in, 250 lb per piece, 737-700/-800) but that is a shipping document, not the accessibility disclosure, and it is not linked from any Southwest accessibility page.

Published ≠ comparable

The compliant carriers do not publish the same quantity. A maximum device size, a raw door opening and a width-by-height envelope are three different things, and treating them as one number is how a traveller ends up at a gate being told the figure they were given was not a promise.

They also do not agree with each other about the same aeroplane:

This is why a single table of aeroplanes cannot be written, and why the app always answers per carrier, per aircraft, showing whose number it is and when it was read.

How to check this yourself

  1. Open the carrier's accessibility pages and search for cargo, hold, or mobility device dimensions. If finding it takes more than a minute or two, that is itself relevant to the rule's word prominent.
  2. Note which quantity is published — a device maximum, a door opening, or an envelope table — because the three are not interchangeable.
  3. Count aircraft types against the carrier's own published fleet list. The rule says all; several carriers cover part of the fleet.
  4. Record the URL and the date. Figures move without notice, so an undated claim about what an airline publishes is not checkable.
